Cheeku , also known as Manilkara zapota, sapodilla
Cheeku has an exceptionally sweet and delicious flavour along with lots of nutritional values. Chiku is one of the best fruits to provide quick energy as Sapodilla is loaded with fructose and sucrose and regarded as a natural boosting energy food.
Cheeku has a fleshy brown skin and grainy sweetness. It is rich in Vitamin A and C, provides energy, has an anti-inflamatory affect, helps in digestion, is a source of antioxidants, rich in calcium, controls blood pressure, considered good during pregnancy (a sapota can help to deal with morning sickness and dizziness), controls weight and is considered good for skin.
Cheeku originates from Central America. It is now cultivated in many other tropical areas and especially in Southeast Asia. The tree on which the fruit grows has a juice in the bark used to make chewing gum. Cheeku- Sapodilla is in size and shape like a small potato. The shell is brown and uneven, but easy to peel off. The pulp is juicy and very aromatic. The color of the pulp is slightly yellowish or reddish brown and the fruit may contain some black stones. The texture is somewhat grainy, as in a gray bulb. The taste is sweet and can be reminiscent of honey or apricot. When Cheeku-sapodilla is immature it contains tannic acid and a milky latex which makes the fruit inedible. It must therefore be eaten ripe.
Cheeku is eaten naturally, as a snack or as a dessert. The fruit is split in half and eaten with spoon like a kiwi. The skin may be chewy and not normally eaten. In some fruits, there may be stones in the pulp, but these are loose and easy to remove.
There are no known nutritional values or properties for this fruit.
Cheeku should be intact and free from wounds and injuries. It must be so mature that it yields to a weak pressure.
A mature product has a shorter shelf life than an immature one and must be kept cooler. Immature sapodilla matures best at room temperature.
